NIH DP1: Director's Pioneer Award

An Essay, Not a Research Plan

DP1 does not use the standard NIH Specific Aims page or a Significance/Innovation/Approach Research Strategy. Instead, the entire scientific case is a single essay, capped at 5 pages, uploaded as Essay.pdf into the Research Strategy attachment. The essay must address seven required elements, each as its own labeled subsection, in this order:

• Scientific Areas — primary and secondary two-digit area codes
• Project Title
• Project Description — the scientific challenge or opportunity and your pioneering approach to it
• Evidence of PD/PI's Innovativeness — concrete, specific examples of scientific creativity
• How the Planned Research Substantially Differs from Past Work — demonstrate this is a new, distinct direction, not an extension or scale-up of current research
• Suitability for the Pioneer Award Program — why this project is better served by DP1 than by a traditional NIH grant
• Statement of Research Effort Commitment — confirm your ability to meet the required effort percentages

No Preliminary Data, No Detailed Budget

DP1 applications do not include preliminary data, a detailed experimental plan, a standalone bibliography, an Equipment section, or letters of collaboration or support. A detailed budget justification is not required either. This is a deliberate departure from standard NIH grants: reviewers are evaluating the idea and the investigator, not methodological readiness or an itemized spending plan.

Single PD/PI and Effort Commitment

DP1 is a single-PD/PI mechanism; multiple-PI applications are not permitted. Because the award funds a substantial commitment of the investigator's own time, applicants must state their effort commitment directly in the essay: more than 51% (6+ person-months) in years 1-3, 33% (4 person-months) in year 4, and 25% (3 person-months) in year 5.

Three Reference Letters, Nothing Else

Exactly three letters of reference are required, no more and no fewer, each capped at 2 pages. Referees submit their letters directly and electronically through the eRA Commons reference portal ahead of the NOFO deadline; the letters are not written by or routed through the PD/PI. Content should give specific, concrete examples of the PD/PI's innovativeness and creativity, since that evidence carries significant weight in review.

How Review Works

DP1 review happens differently than a standard study section. Mail reviewers screen every application first, then a 12-15 member editorial panel selects finalists for 10-minute interview presentations. Reviewers are deliberately chosen for breadth of scientific perspective rather than narrow subfield expertise, so an essay that only makes sense to a specialist in the exact topic is treated as a real weakness, not a neutral trait.

New Applications Only

DP1 applications must be new. Renewals and resubmissions of a declined DP1 application are not permitted under this mechanism. Always confirm exact page limits, deadlines, and budget figures against the current fiscal year's NOFO (e.g. RFA-RM-series) and the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide, since these are set per funding cycle.
